![]() Humane societies are overwhelmed by the numbers of cats they are required to handle. Veterinarians, humane society workers, animal shelter personnel, and other animal lovers worry about the numbers of community cats that are euthanized. Estimates are that cats kill about 2.4 billion birds annually in the United States and 100 to 350 million in Canada. Wildlife personnel are worried about the deaths of birds and extinction of wildlife species attributable to outdoor cats. Animal lovers, including veterinarians, are concerned about exposure to extremes of weather and lack of consistent access to food for unowned cats. Veterinarians fit into all of these groups and play a leading role in addressing issues associated with outdoor or community cats. Veterinarians, humane societies, animal shelter personnel, animal lovers, wildlife personnel, home owners, car owners, and municipal governments are all concerned about outdoor cats. ![]() In Canada, there is an estimated 1.4 to 4.2 million feral cats (which comprise the vast majority of unowned cats) compared with about 9.3 million owned cats. In the United States it is estimated that there are about 70 million unowned cats, compared with about 85 million owned cats. Outdoor cats comprise 3 groups - owned cats that are allowed to roam, unowned stray cats that represent lost or abandoned cats, and feral cats. ![]()
